Anti Motor Torpedo Boat (AMTB) Battery No. 2

The AMTB battery No. 2 on Whale Island was completed and manned through 1944.  The Battery had two fixed 90mm guns on M3 mounts, two mobile 90mm M1A1 guns, and two 40mm guns.  The AMTB batteries could also be used for anti-aircraft defense. 

Many buildings and Quonset huts have collapsed on Whale Island.  There are no standing buildings that date from WWII.  The emplacements for the fixed 90mm guns (No. 3 and No. 4) are at the western side of the island atop a small hill.  Gun No. 4 is undisturbed.  the gun No. 3 emplacement has a temporary

tent-building on top.  There is a clearing today where the two mobile guns were positioned.  The Range station consists of a long trench with four pits.  This is hard to find and hard to photograph.  The battery is located on private property.
