Harbor Defenses of Sitka, Alaska

LOCATION : Shoals Point

I took the following photos at Shoals Point in 2004 and 2005.  The two 20mm AA guns were two of the 14 the navy supplied for the Army's harbor defenses.  The two searchlights No. 7 and No. 8 were placed at a small point halfway to Lava Point, just one mile north of Shoals Point .  The landing beach is on the east coast of Shoals Point.  The road, power pole and tank are all located just inside the trees at the landing beach.

There are two 20mm AA gun positions located just east of Battery Allen.

One can clearly see how logs were used to help camouflage the 20mm AA positions.

Each 20mm AA position has a hatch that leads to a small room.

Some garrison buildings have collapsed at the searchlight site.

Here are two more collapsing garrison structures at the searchlight site.

This storage tank is located just inside the trees at the landing beach.

The Army used trees as power poles at Shoals Point.

Here is a view of the road at Shoals Point.

This is the road as it appears in the Quonset hut camp at Shoals Point.

This is the road at it exists next to the loading dock at the beach where the men and supplies were dropped off.

This is where the road comes out at the small sandy beach where men and materials landed.

There are numerous 50 gallon drums rusting in the trees at the landing beach.

This is St. Lazaria Island as seen from Shoals Point.
