Artillery Command Post (1942)

Before the Army completed the Basic Plan for the Harbor Defenses of Sitka, Alaska in June of 1942, a headquarters building was built on Kirushkin Island.  The building was of splinter-proof concrete and partially buried with rock.  On top of the  building was a wooden structure, perhaps a tower for fire control or observation that was accessible from the building by a hatch in the roof.

Today this bunker is hidden back in the trees and brush that cover Kirushkin Island.  The date 1942 is stamped into the concrete just inside the entrance.

The date 1942 stamped just inside the temporary Artillery Command Post on Kirushkin Island - Summer 1997
